 My mother died from diabetes.

Until one day, everything changed.
She called me after being released from rehab and told me her doctor had finally referred her to a dietitian.
After more than 20 years.
I asked her, “No one ever referred you before?”
She said no.
That was the moment I understood.
She didn’t fail.
She was never given the right information.
She was told to stop eating sugar.
So she switched to Diet Pepsi.
She scraped icing off cake.
No one explained how her body actually worked.
No one explained insulin.
No one explained how carbohydrates affect blood sugar.
